Commercial Fishing Video Of The Day | Hidden Falls 2014

Here are some highlights from the beginning of the salmon season this year in Hidden Falls.

Commercial Fishing Photo Of The Day | F/V Optimus | Sitka Herring 2014

The Sitka Sac Roe Herring officially started yesterday at 1:45.  Numerous boats tested their nets one last time in the early morning, before the fishery got underway.  Fishermen are extremely determined to harvest the entire quota after last season’s lackluster harvest.  The fish seem to be spawning fast and early, it should be interesting to see how the harvest develops this season.  Price is pretty much at its lowest ever, fishermen are receiving 150 up front and will hope for a better price as the fish goes to market.

Commercial Fishing Photo Of The Day | Girls Kill Fish Too

Crewmember Javani Steward is all smiles aboard the F/V Natalie Gail. This was the last day of fishing in Alaska before most boats made a mad dash south to catch the Puget Sound pinks that were pouring in.

Commercial Fishing Video Of The Day | F/V Jerilyn Medevac

I heard this call come over the VHF while we were fishing on Noyes Island. The captain sounded truly terrified as he relayed the details of the injury to the Coast Guard. This was obviously a deck wench injury. Hydraulics have absolutely no sympathy! However, NIOSH has sponsored a safeguard known as the “Autostop,” which offers an instant access to a quick stop for the deck wench. Learn more at http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/ As for the crew member, he is recovering nicely.

Commercial Fishing Photo Of The Day | F/V Lucia

The advances in seining technology have changed the design in recent fishing vessels, but few boats are as majestic as the F/V Lucia. This was taken on our most recent fishing opener in Southeast Alaska.

Commercial Fishing Photo Of The Day | Egg Toss | Warm Springs 2013

You have to have an egg toss on the 4th of July! Actually, it was the 5th of July. We fished the day before, so the festivities were delayed but not forgotten. After a long day of celebration, we decided to toss around a few eggs. Yeah, it got a little messy, but the photos were priceless! Happy 4th of July to all the fishermen who missed it out there on the blue. Celebrate it when you can. It stills counts!

Commercial Fishing Photo Of The Day | Rob Bass-Purse Master

Pursing the net is an art form, if you ask Rob Philpott. Most boats have switched to an auto purse device which just rips in the purse line and closes the bottom of the net quickly. However, there is a big difference between efficiency and finesse. New technology, such as the SeineMaster now allows for sensors all over the net to determine the depth, rate of decent, and the overall shape of the net. Soon, we will know all the secrets of the mighty Purse Master.

Commercial Fishing Video Of The Day | Sealion Steals Longline Cod

Via Youtube: Longlining the Bering Sea, sometimes sealions take fish from our line. Here's a view of a sealion agressively stealing cod from our fishing line in the Bering Sea. I have many other bering sea videos on my page.
