Nearly 1200 boats were expected to head out to sea today for the first day of Alaska’s halibut and black cod season.
Commercial fishermen are permitted to catch up to 33 million pounds of halibut and 35 million pounds of black cod in this year’s harvest.
Alaska has one of the largest pacific halibut and black cod populations in the world.
