This will be the last Herring egg shot from the 2013 Sitka Herring Harvest. I always amazed by their beauty. I got this close up shot off of the F/V Tsiu.

I hardly took any footage during the FisherPoets Gathering, so here is a slice of life filmed today while exploring the Astoria waterfront. The epic history of Astoria really amazes me. Most of the day, I was trying to imagine the city nearly a 100 years ago. If only the docks could talk…

In the late 1800s, salmon traps dominated the landscape of commercial fishing in Alaska. For nearly 70 years, the salmon traps efficiently harvested massive volumes and controversy eventually ended the practice when Alaska gained statehood. The traps were primarily ran by large processors in the lower 48, which angered Alaskan locals and spawned the days of “Fish Pirates,” who would steal from these traps in a Robin Hood style liberation of resources. With the advent of statehood, fish traps were retired and and the limited entry permit system that we all know today was put into place. A few relics of fish traps exist today in Excursion inlet and many fishermen still frequent the locations of the old salmon traps, but those days have passed. However, Metlakata recently implemented a modern fish trap that might be an example of the future of fish traps. Is it possible that fish traps could return to Alaska waters? Only time will tell. The history of Craig, Alaska is tied closely to commercial fishing and logging. Over the years, Craig has remained a fairly quaint community, with a population of about 1500 residents. The true treasure of Craig is in the pristine location. Numerous commercial fishermen flood the region for close access to the west coast of Prince Of Wales Island and the rich ocean waters that surround the neighboring islands. Seiners and trollers cherish the “ocean fresh” fish that swarm along the coastal regions. Sport fishermen also relish the quick access to some of the best King salmon fishing in Alaska. Of course, Craig sounds like just another sleepy fishing town in Southeast Alaska, but there is a more mysterious side. Stay tuned for an upcoming Strange Tales post in honor of Halloween that highlights some of the mystery surrounding this simple little town.
