Herring spawn stretches from Nanaimo to Denman Island

It going to be an early season in Sitka.  I think that the Herring Spawn is a better indicator than the whole Groundhog Day.  Alaska and the Pacific Northwest should embrace these events as the beginning of Spring.

Herring fishermen got an earlier-than-normal start to their short season during the weekend.

Gill-netters and seiners converged near the Nanaimo area, as the herring spawn is close to 50 linear kilometres long and stretches from Neck Point to Denman and Hornby Islands, said Brenda Spence of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Nanaimo office.

“It’s not unheard of to open at the end of February but usually the herring fishery opens in the second or third week of March.
