Spring on the British Columbia coast means one thing: herring season is here! It’s that special time when the waters turn a brilliant turquoise, thanks to millions of herring laying their eggs. This isn’t just a stunning natural display; it’s a big deal for local fishers, woven into the area’s history and economy. It’s a yearly reminder of the cool dance between nature and human hustle. Whether you’re in it for the fishing or just the sights, herring spawn season is a unique, laid-back spectacle you won’t want to miss.
Via Youtube: With great anticipation for the herring spawn to start cameras and drones were made ready. This footage is from the first day of the spawn at Qualicum Beach on Vancouver Island on March 13th. The spawn was strong over a medium area and the fishing boats were active. I returned the next day to find some boats still there but the milt that colors the water quite washed out. Glad I was able to make it that day as so far the usual local spots for me have not produced. Hope you make it to the end to see the large number of gulls enjoying the feast!
