Soundings | Cape Disappointment Lighthouse | The Lighthouse LowDown

Cape Disappointment Lighthouse, born in 1856, is a maritime marvel with a tale as wild as the waves it watches over. Back in the day, this lighthouse was like the trusted guide for ships navigating the tricky waters at the Columbia River entrance, helping them steer clear of perilous storms and currents.

But the plot thickens! In 1898, they decided to give it a facelift and moved it to a primo spot. This upgrade took it to new heights, standing tall at 53 feet. It continued to be the guiding light for sailors until 1956 when it gracefully retired from its duties.

Today, it’s a star attraction at Cape Disappointment State Park. You can visit, and if you’re up for it, climb to the top for some jaw-dropping coastal and river views. It’s a must-see for history buffs and anyone who appreciates a bit of maritime magic!
