Commercial Fishing Photo Of The Day | Hasty Herring Happenings

Well, for the first time in this fishery, it closed without catching the entire quota. Continued pressure from Sitka locals and lack of good fish have shut the fishery down. Roughly 2000 tons were left without harvesting in hopes that the population will rebound. The herring fishery has suffered a number of setbacks over the years. After the tsunami in 2012, the fishery has been a pale excuse for what it used to be. The value of the catch is down nearly 50 percent and the volume of the herring runs seems to be wavering towards a decline. This fishery needs some serious help if the fishery is to survive.
