The long Alaskan winter is about to give way to spring, which means its herring time in Sitka. In the wake of last year’s huge forecast failure, the harvest is back to normal. The herring spawn signifies spring in my mind and the beginning of the bounty of ocean life as the oceans come back to life from a cold winter sleep.
