Commercial Fishing Photo Of The Day | Alaskan Rose | Herring Branches

It’s amazing how many eggs can cling to these hemlock branches. Every year in Sitka, the herring gather to spawn in the local waters. The spawning herring deposit their eggs throughout the beaches and sounds and the locals place branches in traditional spots to gather these tasty treats. The real excitement for herring is about the changing of seasons. Every spring, Sitka explodes with life and the waters become milky white from the spawning activity. Its a pure sign that winter is loosing its frigid grasps on Southeast Alaska.
