How Much Will the Tsunami Tragedy Affect Herring Sac Roe Prices?

First of all, my thoughts are with everyone who has been affected by this catastrophe.  The visually devastating effects are easy to see on the media tsunami, but what long lasting effects will this have on and already weakened Japanese economy ?   The primary  consumer of kazunoko, herring roe, is Japan where this is considered a extravagant delicacy.  The herring harvest in Sitka this year is the largest quota ever, which has driven prices way down.  The price is rumored to be 200 to 150 a ton, which is half as much as the value last year.  Currently, Canada is in the midst of their herring season and Sitka is less than three weeks away.   In the wake of this devastation, will kazunoko remain one of Japan’s time honored traditions?  Only time will tell.  Here’s a message for the people of Japan, it means:  Fall down 7 times, get up 8!
