Killer Squid Season in California

Looks like I picked the right time to start Squid Fishing.  I was hoping to head back down after the new year, but it appears that its all over.  Word on the dock speaks of  “boatloads” every night by everyone.  Wow!  I can’t wait until next year.  Enjoy the pics from this past October.

For the first time since harvest limits were put in place in 2002, the state is set this week to close the commercial fishing season for market squid – more than three months early.  Optimal conditions, including colder waters, created what a California Department of Fish and Game biologist called “a banner year for market squid,” which is often consumed as calamari.  Its important locally because San Pedro is a major harbor for commercial squid fishing. Just in the month of October, more than five times the amount of squid was landed in San Pedro than in the same month in 2009.
