The discussion of halibut bycatch follows sharp drops in next year’s harvest because of declining stocks, predicted by the International Pacific Halibut Commission last week.
Commission staff recommended a 24 percent decrease to catch limits in the Western Gulf, a 28 percent drop around Kodiak and a 47 percent drop in Southeast Alaska. Overall next year’s catch limits were down 19 percent.
